UMPh Iasi: The first University of Medicine and Pharmacy in Romania ranked in Times Higher Education World University Rankings

On the criteria academic visibility on an international level, UMPh Iasi is number one in Romania and amongst the first 500 universities worldwide (place 428).

The Grigore T. Popa University of Medicine and Pharmacy Iasi (UMPh Iasi) is the only institution within the Romanian medical organizations ranked in the classification made by The Times Higher Education World University Rankings 2017-2018 and published on September 5, 2017. From Romania, only five institutions took part in this ranking, out of the 1000 elite universities in the world: Babeş-Bolyai University Cluj – Napoca (601-800), Alexandru Ioan Cuza University Iasi (801-1000), University of Bucharest (801-1000), Grigore T. Popa University of Medicine and Pharmacy Iasi (801-1000) and West University Timisoara (801-1000). It is important to mention that in the 13th edition of The Times Higher Education World University Rankings 2017-2018, Grigore T. Popa University of Medicine and Pharmacy Iasi has another first: it is the first time a Romanian medical university gets into this prestigious world classification.

Out of the 20.0000 higher education institutions in the world, only 1000 universities (representing 5%), from 77 countries, were included in this ranking. Almost 62 million of citations were analysed from a total of 12.4 million of scientific research studies over the past five years and also the answers of over 20.0000 officials of the international academic community from 140 countries, regarding the academic reputation of the universities. The contacts of the participants to the ranking were taken from the Elsevier database.

The classification evaluates universities as regards the following five dimensions: teaching activity (30%), research activity (30%), international activity (7,5 %) and the transfer of knowledge towards the social-economic environment (2,5%).  Within them, there are 13 performance indicators with a certain value given in the general classification.

For the academic visibility on an international level indicator, UMPh Iasi is situated on the first position in Romania and on 428 position worldwide, at the knowledge transfer towards the social-economic environment indicator, on the second position, after Babeş-Bolyai University Cluj – Napoca, and for the teaching activity and research activity indicators is situated on the fourth position from the Romanian institutions ranked in this classification. The indicator Activity of Doctoral School situates UMPh Iasi on the 814 position on an international level.

„University ranking represents the instrument for assessing academic performance, but also national and international visibility. The Grigore T. Popa University of Medicine and Pharmacy Iasi was invited to attend The Times Higher Education system for 2018 and the ranking offers an honourable position, due to the efforts of the teaching staff and students, that continue within the didactic and research activity. “I am positive that in the future these efforts will lead to a better ranking of our university.” said Professor Viorel Scripcariu, MD PhD, the Rector of UMPh Iasi.
